Canadian Luke Stegmann Returns To Thunder For 2026 Season
The Phoenix Thunder are thrilled to announce that star defenseman Luke Stegmann will be returning for the 2026 NZIHL season, a massive boost for the team and fans alike. Stegmann, known for his explosive speed and clinical accuracy on the ice, is one of the league’s premier players, and his return signals Thunder’s intent to push hard for the 2026 season.
In the 2025 season, Stegmann was a powerhouse for the team, recording 28 points over 14 game, consistently turning games in Thunder’s favour and thrilling fans with his skill and vision. His leadership on and off the ice has been invaluable, and teammates are already looking forward to reuniting with him.

“We’re thrilled to have him returning” says Head Coach Guillaume Leclancher. “He’s an excellent player who directly supports our ambitions in the NZIHL, but just as importantly, he’s a great fit for our culture and contributes positively to minor hockey. It’s always a strong sign when players choose to come back, it speaks to the environment we are building. I’m really looking forward to his second year, now that he’s more familiar with the league and what it takes to succeed here.”
Fans can expect Stegmann to bring the same intensity and commitment that has made him a fan favourite over the years. With Thunder’s sights set on another championship run, his return couldn’t come at a better time.
The dynamic forward has spent the 2025/26 season playing in Belgium for Bulldogs de Liège, where he’s been lighting up the ice. In 33 games so far, Stegmann has amassed 31 points, showcasing his scoring touch and playmaking ability against top European competition. The Belgian season is still underway, but Luke’s impact has been undeniable.
Before his time in Belgium, Stegmann played professionally for Courchevel-Méribel-Pralognan in France, further honing his skills at a high level of competition. His European experience has only sharpened his speed, vision, and hockey IQ – qualities that made him a standout in New Zealand and are sure to strengthen Thunder’s lineup.
