Charlie Lilly Hits 100-game Milestone With Phoenix Thunder

Dunedin’s Phoenix Thunder defenceman, Charlie Lilly, has joined an exclusive club, playing his 100th NZIHL game – all in Thunder green. For Lilly, the achievement is more than just a number; it’s the result of years of dedication to the team and the sport he loves.

“It’s a massive achievement to reach this landmark in the NZIHL,” Lilly said. “It means a lot to me to play at this level for as long as I have, and even more so with a single team. It really feels like the work I’ve put in has paid off, both on the ice and within the Thunder.”

Looking back at his first games in the league, Lilly recalls the nerves that came with being a young player trying to prove himself. “I still remember how scared I was in my first game, feeling like any mistake I made could cost me future ice time,” he admitted. “Now, once the game begins, I feel the relaxation that comes with experience, and I play a better game because of it.”

Over the years, Lilly has become a staple of the Dunedin hockey community, forging strong ties with the team and its supporters. “Thunder has always felt special because year after year, we’ve been the underdogs,” he said.

Among his many memorable moments, one stands out above the rest – his first NZIHL goal. “It took me a long time to get it, but the relief I felt after scoring was incredible. I’ll never forget it.”

Lilly has also noticed how the league has evolved, especially in recent years. “The pace of the game has changed massively. Young players today have more speed and individual skill, and they’re really able to shine on the ice. There are also more opportunities now. When I was younger, only a few players travelled overseas to play hockey, but now, more and more players are finding chances to develop their game internationally.”

As for what’s next, Lilly is focused on improving his game and setting his sights on the highest level of New Zealand hockey. “I hope to crack into the Ice Blacks in the next few years,” he said. “But I also intend to keep playing for the Thunder and hope to see many more games in the future.”

For now, though, his legacy with the Thunder is well and truly cemented. One hundred games in the NZIHL is no small feat – here’s to many more.
