West Auckland Admirals 4
Southern Stampede 3
Sunday 1 August 2010
Sundays contest at Avondale between the Admirals and Stampede
was a hotly contested
affair, carrying on from Saturdays game. The Admirals came out
strong in the first
period, peppering Southern goalie Aston Brookes with 23 shots. He
held the Admirals
scoreless, as did his counterpart Greg Davis, who faced only 5
Stampede shots.
The most of the scoring took place in the second period, with
Travis McMaster of the
Admirals blasting a slapshot from the high slot past Brookes, just
10 seconds into the
period. Feeding off this boost, the Admirals scored a second goal
from a nifty backhander
from Jouni Kivela, making it 2-0. The Stampede replied almost
immediately, with Gareth
Lloyd scoring to make it 2-1. Kivela blasted a low slapshot 5
minutes later to increase the
Admirals lead to 3-1, but Lloyd replied for the Stampede again to
get his second of the
game, on the powerplay. The second period ended 3-2 for the
Admirals.
The third period was a tight checking 20 minutes, where the
score remained the same
for the first 17 minutes. With just under three minutes remaining,
Danny Smith of
the Stampede was sprung free on a breakaway, but was hooked from
behind. Brett
Speirs took the penalty shot, and he made no mistake. 3-3 draw with
just 180 seconds
remaining.
The Admirals, seeking the full three points for a victory to
keep their playoff hopes alive,
went on a full-on attack. This paid dividends, with Robbie
Chamberlain pouncing on a
loose puck in the slot, and firing it past Brookes with 1m55s on
the clock. The Admirals
defended the coming Stampede pressure, to hang on for the
victory.
With the victory, the Admirals now sit in second place overall
with 21 points, while the
Stampede were dealt a blow to their playoff hopes and sit on 12
points.
