Admirals 53: Stampede 44
NZIHL Round 8
West Auckland Admirals vs. Tararua Real Iced Coffee Southern
Stampede
Held at: Paradice Ice Arena, Lansford Cres, Avondale
Auckland
The Tararua Real Iced Coffee Southern Stampede came to Auckland
full of
confidence after sharing the series played against the Admirals in
Queentstown 4
weeks ago. They were taking no chances for this game and had Aston
Brookes
to start in net. The West Auckland Admirals were restored to full
strength with all
their key players available for this round and feeling confident
after their 2 wins over
Thunder in Dunedin last weekend.
The game began at a furious pace with both goal tenders happy to be
at the top of
their game and kept the puck out of their respective nets.
The Admirals scored first 4 minutes into the game, with a shot from
the blue line by
defensemen Braedyn Durbin, Stampede replied 5 minutes later with a
goal from their
defencemen Ryan OKeefe. End of first period 1:1.
Stampede took the lead early in the first minute of the second
period with a goal from
Brett Speirs. Admirals replied 30 seconds later when centre Travis
McMaster scored
with a backhanded wrist shot in the top right corner. The Admirals
got some reward
from the dominance of the attacking zone with captain Steve Huish
quickly followed
scoring with 16.57 on the clock and then backing it up with a
second goal just 5
minutes later. Just when the Admirals thought they had a good lead,
Stampedes
Simon Wilson got passed Admirals goaltender Greg Davis to end the
period 4.3 to
the Admirals
Coming into the third period both teams knew they were in with a
chance for the vital
championship points the play was intense with teams vying for
dominance. With 7
minutes to go in the period Admirals were hot on attack but a
misdirected Admirals
pass was intercepted by Stampede veteran Brett Speirs in his own
defensive zone
and he skated the length of the ice to score the tying goal.
Regular time finished 4 all and the game went into 5 minutes of
overtime. While both
teams had their chances neither team was able to score the winning
goal. To decide
the game each team had 3 penalty shots to break the deadlock,
Admirals secured
the win with forward Jouni Kivela being the only successful scorer
in the shootout.
Final Score Admirals win 5:4.
