Game two of the Dunedin Thunder vs the West Auckland Admirals
was a much closer contest than the previous night. The Thunder
started the game with fire in their bellies and put the Admirals on
their heals early. Their renewed effort saw them take a 1-0 lead
late in the first period. Martin Millerioux let a slap shot go from
the point while on the powerplay.
The Thunder added to their lead in the second with Millerioux
again firing an accurate slap shot in to cleanly beat Admirals
goalie Michael Hopkinson. The Admirals would not lie down however.
Travis McMaster got the Admirals on the board with a wrap around
goal following some effective work down low. Joonis Markko would
then tie the game to send the teams to the change rooms with a 2-2
tie after 2 periods. Fortunately for the Thunder, a scary moment
seeing an Admirals player collide with Rick Parry in the crease
resulted in no injury. With his helmet knocked off, Parry remained
on the ice for some time before regaining his feet and continuing
the game.
The 3rd period remained very tight with the game looking like it
was headed into overtime. With less then half a period remaining,
Andy Hart scored a timely goal to put the Admirals up 3-2. The
Thunder kept pressuring for an equalizer however the Admirals
scored an empty net goal to seal the victory 4-2. So despite the
Thunder looking much more like a team than the previous nights
encounter, the Admirals also lifted there game to see them return
to Auckland with 6 important competition points to keep them in the
hunt for the finals. For the Thunder the closeness of the
competition keeps them in it, but will need to win most if not all
of their remaining games.
