On Sunday night, those in attendance at Avondale were treated to
a high scoring, entertaining game between the West Auckland
Admirals and the Botany Swarm. Running on adrenaline from the
previous game, both teams came out to hard hitting and
frantic-paced ice hockey.
The first period saw the Swarm and Admirals exchange goals, with
Sam Boniface scoring just 34 seconds into the game. The Admirals
replied 10 minutes later with a quick shot from Andy Hart. 1-1
after the first period.
The Admirals got into penalty trouble in the second period, with
KC Ball, Ian Wannamaker and Alexander Polosov netting power play
goals for the Swarm. Travis McMaster scored one for the Admirals,
but Sam Moses replied for the Swarm soon after. The score was 5-2
for the Swarm going into the third period.
A determined Admirals team clawed back in the third, with goals
from Aleksi Rantalainen (2 goals), Jouni Kivela and Steven Huish.
The Swarm replied with a goal from Charlie Huber and another by
Wannamaker, making it 7-6 Swarm with 3 minutes to go. The Admirals
comeback was halted however, with Polosov scoring an empty net goal
with :16 left on the clock, to seal it for the Swarm.
Final score was 8-6.
Unlike the previous encounter between the two, both teams played
disciplined, efficient hockey in this game. True to the spirit of
sport, good sportsmanship and respect prevailed, and the crowd was
entertained with a fantastic show.
