Game 1 STP 4 - 4 BTS
03 July 2009
Friday night saw the Southern Stampede at home, taking on a
fired up Botany Swarm, who arrived in Queenstown wanting to make up
for the two losses the Stampede inflicted on them in Auckland.
Both teams began the game with some big hits and messy play, and
due to a lot of penalties the play was very interrupted which
seemed to effect the Stampede's fast paced game play which has been
a highlight of their season so far.
The Period saw both Teams show some great defensive play not
allowing either team to gain dominance
End of the first period was nil all
The Swarm scored first in the second period to an unassisted
goal to Martin Lee, and were able to score again in the 12th minute
to lead the period 2 - 0.
This saw the Stampede dig deep and begin to play a style of game
that the 350 plus home fans had become used to.
Simon Wilson scored in the 10th minute assisted by Joe Bjorkman,
followed by another goal 3 minutes later to Simon Glass.
The remained of the period saw both teams fighting hard to
control the puck, the period ended 2 all.
The third period saw the Stampede score first in the
12th minute through Jamie Moore - Carter assisted by
Hayden Argyle and Stacey Rout, after which the Stampede seem to
suffer from a lack of energy, allowing the Swarm to score two quick
goals in the 11th and 10th minutes.
With the score at 4 - 3 to the Swarm, the Stampede were able to
dig deep and produce a stunning game saving goal to the Captain
Simon Glass with just 1.37 left on the clock.
Final Score Stampede 4 - Swarm 4
