New Zealand Ice Hockey League Press Release

Games Botany Swarm (Auckland) vs Southern Stampede (Queenstown)

The Botany Swarm's second round of the 2009 season against the Southern Stampede tested the team both physically and psychologically with an unprecedented double loss for the 2007 and 2008 NZIHL champions.

The puck dropped for game 5 at 5.30pm on Saturday 20 June at Paradice, Botany. Both teams struggled to dominate the ice with no points on the board at the end of the first period. The Stampede scored the first goal early in the second period and this was quickly answered by Ian Wannamaker (11) who scored for the Swarm, assisted by Josh Hay (21) and Jessie Trepanier (16). The Stampede countered with another goal, bringing the score at the end of the second period to 2 -1.

Both teams came out fighting in the third period but the Stampede gained the upper hand, putting up a tough physical game which resulted in a double misfortune for the Swarm - the injury of defenseman Andrew Bourne (25) and a game suspension for forward Josh Hay (21). Swarm fans watched in disbelief as the Stampede scored a flurry of goals, and there were no cheers at the final buzzer, with the final score 7 - 1 to the Stampede.

The Stampede's rally continued into Game 6 the following night, as they made 3 goals in the first period. The Swarm fought hard consistently through the game, resisting the strong offensive lines of the Stampede play after play, but it wasn't until the third period that their perseverance paid off. Martin Lee (4) broke through the defence to put the first goal on the board, two more quickly followed, from Charlie Huber (14) and a breakaway goal from KC Ball (19).

The Swarm were committed to the game and never gave up, even when their frustration was evident, they remained focussed and maintained their pace and presence right through to the end. The Stampede had to work hard for their goals but luck was on their side and they were able to push just that bit harder to take the game 7 - 3.

The teams will meet again on 3rd July at the Stampede's home rink in Queenstown in what promises to be a battle of honour!
